I am Gay Rachel, 18 and an undergraduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I am currently pursuing a diploma in Accountancy.
When I first enrolled myself into Accountancy two years ago, I was fully aware of the commitment and obligations that followed such a choice. Accountancy is definitely not one of the easiest courses offered in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, however it was a path I felt would significantly enrich my education years. Instead of the usual misconceptions that accountants lead a mundane life, I felt that accountancy is an exciting career. Its importance in the business world will always be key and it offers career security and stability, as well as potentially significant financial rewards. I aspire to become a top-notch accountant in the years to come and I believe that Ngee Ann Polytechnic would aid me in realising my goal.
I am someone who believes in giving my best in whatever I do. Hence no matter how tough the going gets, I will always adopt an optimistic attitude at work. I may lack work experiences due to my young age however I believe that my determination in always delivering only the best results would make up for that. Whenever met with any problems, I would not hesitate seeking advice from my colleagues as I believe that I will be able achieve more if I worked with others than against them.
As a student, I have always placed my studies as the top priority in my life. However during my free time I love to read novels and literature books. My interest in reading has been cultivated by my parents ever since I was a child. It has always awed me how writers can string words together to convey a certain meaning or how a mere 4-lined poem can speak a thousand words.
Next on the list would be most girl’s smiled-upon hobby, shopping. Personally, I feel that shopping is a way to reward ourselves after a long day at work. In my opinion, it is very important that we give ourselves a pat on the shoulder occasionally by placing aside a bit of time and money to dote on the side of us that has worked hard.
All in all I feel that life is a chance to grow my soul and I will make the best out of it because life is too short for me to look back with regrets.
Strengths
Conscientious
Being an individual who likes all tasks and projects assigned to me to be completed to the final details without even minor flaws, it definitely requires me to be conscientious at work. I am someone who is very dedicated to my work. I will work very hard and go to great lengths to achieve what I want. There have been instances during my work period with ERA when I stayed in the office till 3a.m. just to make sure that I have sent the correct details to the various agents for their viewings the following day. Achieving perfection is definitely easier said then done. There are bound to be many obstacles along the way to seeking perfection, in such times I have to hold on to the faith that if I am determined and if I try hard enough I can achieve almost anything.
Decisive
I believe that being decisive is vital for achieving success in life. From the strength of the decision made one would have the ability to act. I am strongly against the idea of being wishy-washy at work. In my opinion that would not be able to solve any problems instead it will give rise to a string of other problems. When I was working as a sales girl at Kokon Tozai, I had to be decisive when unexpected situations, like theft, occurred. I had to decide on what would be the most successful and wise course of action.
Eager to learn
“Learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn” quote by Peter F. Ducker.
It is always important that we consistently learn and improve ourselves whether it is attending upgrading courses or seeking advice from colleagues. I have also learnt from my past work experiences the importance of accepting people’s opinions and admitting our mistakes. Only when we are willing to accept our wrongs can we achieve greater heights in future. Adding on, I am still rather inexperienced in the working field therefore I should adopt a humble attitude and learn from the experienced ones in the field. Their vast knowledge in the field would greatly enhance my capabilities and help me grow to be more skilful and efficient in producing quality work.
Patience
Patience is by far one of my most commendable character traits. I have a very high level of tolerance when it comes to dealing with unpleasant situations. It is not often that I am seen throwing a temper as I have always believed that making a fuss is one of the most terrible ways to handle an already unpleasant situation. When I was working as a coordinator, I often had to make calls to people to ask them to allow our agents to bring buyers to view their houses. Many would reject me immediately and I would then have to patiently explain to them the benefits of allowing our agents handle their units. Some of the call recipients needed me to explain all the benefits of working with our agents for numerous times. I believe that patience is required in every job because one moment of impatience may ruin many things like causing a company to lose a potential customer or a potential business deal.
Weakness
Conscientious
I tend to be quiet at times when I am with people that I am not familiar with. However I believe that experiences in the work force would equip me with vital skills to communicate better with people. With a positive learning attitude and skills that I am prepared to learn, I am sure that in time my weakness would not be an obstacle.

ERA (Property Agent Company)
During my 4 month break after the release of the ‘O’ level results I interviewed for a job with a locally well established property agent firm, ERA. I signed on a 3 month contract with them as a coordinator. My job scope includes arranging viewings of properties for several agents. I also needed to do simple data entry and data compilation for the agents. My job requires me to be very meticulous and careful as any mistake made on my part may lead to serious consequences like upsetting the buyer if a viewing which was planned previously is not carried out. This would in turn result in a loss of a potential business deal and more importantly the loyalty of a customer. Being my first job I made several mistakes along the way and was told off on many occasions by my manager. I never truly understood the importance of double checking a piece of work before submission but this job has taught me so. I had to make it a point to always double check all the viewings arranged and make sure I sent the correct details to the agents. Being a coordinator also requires me to be able to speak fluently and handle nasty situations with a calm mind and polite attitude since I had to make frequent calls to the public.
Kokon tozai (Japanese store located at Citylink, Singapore Flyer, Terminal One and Terminal Three)
After starting school in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I took up a part-time job at Kokon Tozai as a sales girl. Kokon Tozai is a store that retails products exclusively designed and made from fine quality Kimono fabric and imported from Japan. Kokon Tozai is unlike any other fashion boutique along the streets of Orchard the people that patronizes the store is also not the usual crowd. Kokon Tozai targets mainly the tourists and the products they sell are generally more expensive too. Therefore it is important for me acquire product knowledge and know how to converse with the various kinds of customers in order to promote sales. I am also required to take stock-checks at the end the month which is a tedious process that requires concentration as an error could mean that I have to redo the stock-check again. On occasions when there are not enough staff and I have to tend the shop alone I also have to multi-task like promote sales when customers patronize and constantly keep a look out for the counter area. During my period of work with Kokon Tozai I have matured and learnt to be responsible for the mistakes I make. As a cashier and salesgirl, there will be times when the accounts do not tally at the end of the day perhaps due to giving customers wrong change. In such a situation, I will have to be responsible for my mistake and top up the money that is lacking. I have also brushed up quite a fair bit on my communication skills since I had to always engage in small chats with customers.
